Class Procedures Procedures are a part of life. For example, we follow procedures for boarding an airplane, crossing the street, and getting emergency help. The reason we have procedures in life is so that people can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient ways people do things. There are also procedures in this classroom. These procedures establish our classroom culture.
Beginning of class: Come to class on time with all of your supplies (pen, paper, etc). Start working on any assignment that is posted on the board without talking to your classmates. You should also copy down the aim for the day.
Lateness: If you arrive to class after the bell rings, place your late note on my desk and quietly take your seat. If you do not have a late note, you will receive a late violation. It is your responsibility to make up any work that you missed.
Participation: Students should actively participate and get involved during the lesson by asking and answering questions and making thoughtful comments. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before making a comment. Class participation will count towards your final grade each semester.
Dismissal: Once the bell rings, wait for the teacher to complete the lesson and dismiss the class. Do not begin to pack your books until the teacher dismisses you.
Homework: Each assignment must include your first and last names, class number, and date. Copying homework is considered cheating. You should complete assignments on time. Three times a semester, late homework assignments can be handed in the next day and will be marked one grade lower. For example, if your assignment grade was a 9/10, it will be lowered to an 8/10. Any subsequent late homeworks will automatically be recorded as a zero.
Absence / Missing Class: If you miss class for any reason, you are responsible to make up any work and assignments that you missed. Check the class binder to review the day’s aim and class handouts.
Group Work & Quieting a Class: There will be times when students are working in groups to complete an assignment. When it is time for the class to come together and quiet down, the teacher will raise her hand in the front of the room and/or close the light. At that time, turn and face the teacher and be ready for instructions.
Bathroom: Only one student at a time may leave the classroom. To indicate that you need to leave, cross two fingers when you raise your hand. The teacher will then motion for you to leave the room. This will help minimize classroom disruption and allow the lesson to continue smoothly. The teacher has the right to revise this policy throughout the year as necessary.
Other Classroom Expectations
Cheating: There is a zero tolerance policy towards cheating. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero on the assignment or test on which he/she cheated. Plagiarism is considered cheating. A zero grade received for cheating on a test will not be dropped. If necessary, further action may be taken. Cell Phones / Electronic Devices: Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off during class time. Using these items during class will affect your classwork grade and result in the items being taken away and handed into the office. Classwork: In addition to participating, students are expected to come to class with pens and paper, take notes throughout the lesson, and complete all in-class assignments and activities.
Grading Policy Your final grade will be determined by a combination of your grades on tests and quizzes, class participation, homework assignments, and classwork. There will be opportunities throughout the year for extra credit.
Approximate Distribution of Grades: Tests ~50% Quizzes and Minor Writing Assignments ~15% Participation and Classwork ~15% Homework Assignments ~10% Current Events Assignments ~10% Note: These percentages are only estimates and may be slightly altered based on each semester/class.
